A few small ways to make reading part of your life again — no pressure, and no identity required.

Carry a book with you.

Let the book become part of your everyday life. Use small pockets of time during the day — on the train, in a park, or while waiting for something.

Start with something you actually want to read.

Pick something you’re already interested in. A recommendation from someone who knows your taste is a great place to begin. If you haven’t read in a while, a children’s story, a short novel, a collection of essays, or a graphic novel can be a wonderful way back in.

Baby steps.

Reading doesn’t become more meaningful simply because a book is long, dense, or widely acclaimed. Start small and let the momentum build on its own.

And don’t be afraid to stop.

Sometimes a book isn’t right for you in that moment. Put it down and try another one. There are far too many wonderful books in the world to feel guilty about not finishing one.

Disclaimer: this applies to books. We take no responsibility for other aspects of life.

Most importantly

Don’t try to become a reader. Just start reading.

The identity can come later. The first step is simply opening a book and giving yourself a few quiet minutes with it.
